Link me up

I realize this is mostly very late in the game; I really meant to post this stuff a long time ago but that didn’t work out. Whoops. I apologize to those of you for whom this is all old news.

  • Not only is Iceland’s Prime Minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir, the first openly gay world leader, but she married her parnter, Jonina Leosdottir.
  • If the above isn’t reason enough to think Iceland is totally aweseome and worth visiting, the Icelandic Tourist Board launched this really cute tourist inititive called Iceland Wants to be Your Friend.
  • And in other unrelated linkage, have you guys seen The Seventeen Magazine Project? Essentially, this teenager decided to spend a month living by the sugestions in Seventeen Magazine and blogging about the experience. I realize the month she spent doing this is long over, but I thought it was worth the plug: this girl sounds very smart and self-aware and I really think she deserves a high-five, or something.

So, um, hi

When I “re-opened” haphazardblog, I really did mean for it to be a place where I’d actually post things above and beyond just stuff from twitter. That said, the subscribers to this blog have gone up exponentially since I started shipping my tweets here again, which leads me to believe that that’s what people want. I guess I can deal with that, since I often find myself at a loss for original content. I’m always open to ideas, so if you want to share something, please either leave a comment or get in touch.

I could always use some help

Posted on the February 11th, 2010 under updates by Sue

Ashley commented on my post from the other day about how when I updated my twitter with new blog posts, the links weren’t working. Again, Ashley, thanks for that. I saw that my twitter was updating, so I assumed everything was working properly. It didn’t occur to me to check the links to make sure they worked. I could always use help like that: if you notice that something here on haphazardry.net either looks funny or doesn’t appear to be working, I’d really appreciate it it if you either left a comment or sent me an E mail. In some cases, I already know if something’s not working, but sometimes, like in the case of the twitter updates, I didn’t know. I can’t fix something if I don’t know it’s not working, you know? But anyway – I’m trying out a different plugin and hopefully the updates are being sent properly.

And in other news, ya know my Q&A blog thingy? I have zero questions in my queue and it’s very lonely. If you’re bored and want to ask some questions to help relieve my bored, I’d love it.

Blogging Pet Peeves

Posted on the February 9th, 2010 under internet & technology by Sue

I’m one of those people who generally enjoys reading other people’s blogs; all different kinds. But there are several things that will make me leave your blog really quickly and I thought I’d make a list of things that have annoyed me about some blogs I’ve visited. Obviously, these are just my opinions and should not be taken as fact.

  • Too many ads. I realize that people who blog at free blogging sites might not have control over this, so I try to be forgiving about that. Furthermore, I understand why someone would want to have ads on their blogs and I wouldn’t leave just because someone has a couple ads. It’s when there are too many ads that I get annoyed because I’d find them distracting. I’m not even sure how many ads are too many…it’s one of those things where I know if if I see it.
  • Partial feeds. As a blog reader, I much prefer to read updates from my favorite blogs in Google Reader. OK, so maybe you’re one of the people with ads on your site and you want people to have to visit your blog in order to see the ads. But you know what? I’m not going to click through to your site. In fact, if I see that your blog only has a partial feed, I’m instantly going to unsubscribe. I don’t care how amazing your blog is, if the feed isn’t full/complete, I’m not reading. You know what else? You can always monitize your feed if that’s your thing; I’m much more forgiving of people with ads on their feeds than people with partial feeds.
  • Blogs with music that plays automatically. I’m glad you think that you have a favorite song. If you’re a songwriter, I’m impressed. But if any song starts playing automatically when I visit your blog, I’m leaving without even bothering to read. If you want to post a song, at least give me the option of playing it or not.
  • Blogs that are hard to read. Yes, I realize I said that I read blogs in Google Reader. However, I have to visit your blog at least once in order to subcribe and if I find text that’s hard to read either because the font is too small/weird looking or if it’s too dark/bright/a weird contrast with the background, I’m leaving. Basically, if I can’t read your blog, I’m not going to be able to find the feed.
  • Blogs with too much clutter. I guess this goes along with the ad thing: if there are too many widgets/crap in your sidebar or if the header is too large, I’m not going to bother. To me, there’s too much crap in your sidebar if the sidebar is longer than the posts on the mainpage; the header is too large if I have to scroll down to read any of your text.
  • Too many posts about giveaways. Don’t get me wrong, I like getting free stuff as much as the next person, but I can’t stand blogs in which practially every post deals with some giveaway or other. I mean, if I didn’t like the blog before, hosting a giveaway isn’t going to make me like it any more.
  • What are your blogging pet peeves?

    Some new blogs

Posted on the February 2nd, 2010 under updates by Sue

OK, so I’m getting kind of carried away with the blogs, but whatever. In the last couple days, I’ve created the following blogs:

    • haphazard scrapbook
This is basically the blog of things I found and wanted to share…I just scheduled a bunch of video and quote posts, but I’m sure they’ll be other things here too.
    • word count journal #1
I came across this site and thought it sounded like a fun concept: basically, on the first day you post 1 word, on the second day you post 2 words, etc. I thought I’d try this for a month and see if I like it.
    • haphazard dreams
Essentially a dream journal. I have some crazy dreams and thought I’d do this for the lol’z.

Have I mentioned that I have a grand total of 8 blogs now?
