Thursday Three (04 March)

Posted on the March 4th, 2010 under love& life by Sue

Thursday Three is a weekly event in which I post three random facts about myself. These can be anything from an activity I did over the past week to a physical feature. I invite you to post random facts about you either in the comments or in your own blog. Have fun!

  1. My only experience “moving” was when I moved in and out of my college dorm rooms.
  2. I have a BA in history.
  3. I’m in the midst of applying for grad school. I’d like to be a librarian when I grow up.

What’d you get? Wednesday (03 March)

Posted on the March 3rd, 2010 under love& life by Sue

What’d you get? Wednesday is a weekly meme/event/series in which I list the things I’ve bought over the last week. This may or may not appear every week, depending on whether I buy anything or not.

  • From Darkcandles:

    • Six simmering oils in the following scents:
      1. Wedding Cake Icing
      2. Caramel Apple
      3. Devils’s Food Cake
      4. Popcorn
      5. Grapefruit
      6. French Vanille
  • From LL Bean:
    • Two light zip up jacket/sweatshirt things. Both in the same style, but one’s black and the other is blue.

Women’s history month. What should I do?

Posted on the March 1st, 2010 under love& life by Sue

Happy women’s history month! One of the things I’m grateful for was the chance to take two semesters worth of American women’s history in college. It’s too bad my (women’s!) college didn’t have more women’s history options…or any classes about people of color for that matter.

I’m never sure how to celebrate something like this. I did come across some book lists (like this one and this one) so maybe I can spend some time reading (or re-reading) some of those books. Got any other ideas?

End of the month report: February

Posted on the March 1st, 2010 under updates by Sue

So now that February is over, let’s talk about the poll and survey I posted about earlier this month. The poll asked if you pee in the shower. Four people voted, all said that yes, they pee in the shower. Maybe I’m the minority, but I find peeing in the shower to be disgusting. Call me irrational, I probably am. If you’re wondering, I usually pee before I get in the shower and will get out of the shower and go over to the toilet if I have to pee badly enough. As for the survey, I asked people to pretend there was a TV show about their lives and to answer questions based on this imaginary show. The survey didn’t get any responses. That’s ok; I probably made the mistake of doing this on a blog that doesn’t get much traffic. I guess I won’t bother with a poll or survey for March…I’ll resume doing that stuff when traffic picks up.

In the meantime, I’m really hoping people will start using this Q&A feature because I think it has the potential to be fun.

Thoughts: Let’s get the negative out of the way:
I really didn’t like THE CONSTANT USE OF CAPS and the! unnecessary! exclamation! points! I thought they were irritating and off-putting. Furthermore, many of the “book reports” found in this book used really long quotations from the books they were discussion. I thought it was unnecessary to use such long quotes. I read this book because I was interested in what Lizzie Skurnick had to say. I can always go read the novels discussed in this book for myself if I’m feeling so inclined. Perhaps these issues could have been fixed by better editing.

Maybe I was a deprived teenager, but I didn’t read most of the books discussed here. The “book reports” probably would’ve meant more to me if I had.

All these issues aside, there was something about this book that I really liked. Other than the editing issues I mentioned above, I liked the way Lizzie Skurnick writes; I felt like I was having a conversation with an old friend. It gave me some ideas for YA novels I might want to go read. Maybe I’ll come back and re-read this later.
